Mexican authorities secured a package with approximately one kilogram of fentanyl from an Asian country at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) on Friday, with a value of around $20 million. According to a statement released by the authorities, agents detected a package declared as 'cosmetics,' which 'when subjected to review using X-ray equipment and with the support of the canine 'Nestor,' from the tactical area of Customs, tested positive for a possible drug.' The text, published by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported on actions led by the Secretariats of the Navy, Defense, the Attorney General's Office (FGR), the National Guard (GN), along with Customs personnel. Agents thoroughly inspected the package and found a hermetically sealed plastic bag containing a white powder with an approximate weight of one kilogram. 'After an infrared identification analysis, the result was positive for fentanyl hydrochloride, so it was channeled to the central Customs laboratory to verify the weight and type of narcotic seized,' the SSPC stated. According to the agency, this seizure prevented the production of approximately one million doses of fentanyl, with an estimated value of $20 million. Authorities did not specify the name of the company that allegedly sent the package, nor the exact country of origin. The actions come amid pressure from US President Donald Trump, who has reiterated the possibility of attacking the cartels operating in Mexico to combat drug trafficking. His Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, has repeatedly refused to allow any US military action on Mexican soil. Trump's rhetoric on this matter has intensified after Washington launched a military intervention in Caracas to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and transport him to New York, where he remains detained and faces drug trafficking charges. From February 2025 to January 14, the Mexican Government, thanks to the 'Northern Border Operation' —agreed with President Trump to avoid tariffs on Mexico— has detained 10,784 people and confiscated 119.5 tons of drugs, including 602.8 kilograms of fentanyl.
